For Mitsubishi HD1000U
D= L - S*0.165
P = S*1.445 (*P is the projection distance)
For example:
If the screen size is 100 inches (all screen size mean diagonal viewing area). And your screen is 20 inches from the ceiling, then the projector drop 3.5 inches from the ceiling for optimal result.
If the screen size is 100 inches, and screen is 12 inches from from the ceiling, you got -4.5 inches, which means, at this case you would have to use keystone with tilt function from the mount, or use lens shift.
* Assumptions: 1. No lens shift, keystone, digital zoom has been considered. 2. Data for reference only, intend to be accurate but no guarantee.
